Who were BBHC?
For me personally, this band is worth, it must not be missed.
Please do not confuse this band with the failed TV serials 'Big Brother'!
Big Brother & The Holding Co. was founded in 1965 by Dave Eskerson, Chuck Jones, Sam Andrew, Peter Albin and Ed Bogas.
James Gurley replaced in November 1965, Dave Eskerson because this was after the American Youth Policy was too young to play in bars. In addition, in February 1966 by Chuck Jones replaces David Getz on drums.
From February 1966 to June 1966, the band played in the following cast and celebrated local successes
- Sam Andrew (gtr / voc),
- Peter Albin (bs / voc),
- James Gurley (gtr),
- David Getz (drums),
- Ed Bogas (vio) In June 1966, finally came
Janis Joplin to the band.
Janis, only timidly in the background, Sam Andrew and Peter Albin dominated. Only with the appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, one could speak of the "singer" Janis. The band was on that day in a flash world famous. 1967 the band released their first album 'Big Brother & The Holding Company Featuring Janis Joplin' to mainstream. In April 1968 she received a contract with Columbia Records. There appeared in the same year, then the second album "Cheap Thrills" (front cover by Robert Crumb). Cast of Janis Joplin (vocals), Sam Andrew (gtr / voc), Peter Albin (bs / voc), James Gurley (gtr) and David Getz (drums) continued until November 1968. decided
Then Janis Joplin, to pursue a solo career, and left the band. For It was put together a new backing band, in which they took as the only Big Brother guitarist Sam Andrew member. This new band appeared at first to under different names, but since 3 Joplin album (I Got Dem Ol 'Kozmic Blues Again Mama), released in late summer 1969, with' Kozmic Blues Band "means.
Sam Andrew left in late summer 1969, the Kozmic Blues Band.
Big Brother & the Holding Co. has Janis Joplin made famous. Unfortunately, the story is in the band never really clear and is only as Janis Joplin's backing band shown.
From August 1969 to February 1972, the band tried by the return of Sam Andrew and the addition of Nick Gravenites to tie (Electric Flag) and Kathi McDonald of past successful times.
The band members got lost after February 1972 in the winds. Only in 1987 the band started to play together again until 2003 and was still active and on tour. First of all surviving original band members were back. James Gurley, however, ended 1997, the employees and was replaced by Tom Finch. included as new singers 1987-1996 Michel Bastian and 1996-1998 Lisa Battle of the band. In the casting of Tom Finch and Lisa Battle, the band brought out a new CD in 1998: "Do what you love." Since the departure of Lisa Battle, the band collaborated with various singers. Main partners were from 2000 to 2002 Lisa Mills, and since then Kacee Clanton. Furthermore, also occurred Wendy Rich, Andra Mitrovich and Sophia Ramos with Big Brother. Tom Finch was in some European tours since 2002, represented by the guitarist Chad Quist from Seattle.
2003 put all the band members to rest.
